[GiDlist] Use 3 GB physical RAM on Windows XP

Good morning

Thank for tour support.

I tried to apply the trick you proposed for use 3 GB of physical RAM on
Windows XP, but I have a problem. There is not a folder in C/program files
called Microsoft Visual Studio.

Any idea?

Thanks

Check the Windows “Task manager” to see how much RAM is spending GiD.
On Windows x32 if the gid.exe process spend as you said 2 GB (of RAM, not
of
file size, files are usually compressed) it will crash
If do you have XP x32 an more than 2GB of physical RAM, could try to use
until 3GB by process with this trick:
_http://www.gidhome.com/support_team/faq_toc/faq40.html#GiD%20and%20the%20Operating%20SystemHow%20to%20make%20GiD%20use%20more%20than%202GB%20on%20Windows%20XP?_
If your results are so big, maybe you need a 64 bits version of GiD and
more
physical RAM
Probably you can write less results or less time steps in your results
file
to be able to handle them.

Enrique

You don’t need to have Visual studio, GiD was already compiled with this
/LARGEADDREASSAWARE flag (from the version 7.5.x)
You only need to configure Windows XP in this way:
MS Windows XP should be configured by adding the flag /3G to the Boot.ini
file. To do this just open the Control panel, click on the System icon, on
the Advanced options panel, then press the Configuration button of the Start
and recuperation section. In this window click on the Edit button inside the
System start section and the Notepad will pop-up with the Boot.ini file
opened. In this file there should be a line like this:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS=“Microsoft Windows XP
Professional” /fastdetect

just add the /3G flag at the end, like:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS=“Microsoft Windows XP
Professional” /fastdetect /3G

Now the file must be saved, and MS Windows restarted
