GiD forum

I'm learning to use Tochnog. It apparently makes extensive use of GiD
for visualization. The problem is, the documentation is very scarce.

There's a *very* brief document that basically says "open this file with
GiD" and that's it.

There's this example that shows some plots, apparently made with GiD too:

I was able to open the .msh file in GiD and display the mesh. But how
about the plot showing the vertical strain? How do I plot that in GiD?

These are the files:

ho_mech1.dat ho_mech1.flavia.msh tn.dvd tn.tmp
ho_mech1.dbs ho_mech1.flavia.res tn.log

Basically, I'm looking for a few indications geared towards the absolute
beginner. Once I take the first few steps, I think I can figure out the
rest on my own.

GiD has two very different modes: preprocessor and postprocessor, with
different menus and tools.

To prepare the data (geometry, mesh, boundary conditions...) must do it in
preprocess mode, to view the results after the calculation must go to
postprocess

Can swith from pre to post for example from the menu: Files-Postprocess

If the files ho_mech1.flavia.msh and ho_mech1.flavia.res are located inside
a folder named ho_mech1.gid then you can open the model in pre and when
changing to post will be automatically read, else you can also directly read
in post mode with Files-Open... (and select the .flavia.res or .flavia.msh
file, both are related)

You can plot a color map of an scalar result, like 'vertical strain' in post
with
View results-Contour fill-your result

Hello,
I try to model steel anchor in concrete base. The geometry is imported from dxf file; the anchor consists of two cylinders and frustum of cone, the concrete is just a prism.
However, the geometry of the concrete base with hole for anchor is not correct (the hole is not visible in rendering) and mesh around the hole cannot be created. I tried to delete the volume of the concrete base and make the hole in GiD using volume subtraction. I succeeded to create the hole in the prism, but its geometry is warped on the edge of the prism and the mesh cannot be generated again. Is there another way how to obtain the hole with complicated geometry in the concrete prism?

Only with the explanation is not possible to say what to do.
In general DXF is a bad CAD format, if possible it is better to use other
formats, like IGES, Parasolid, ACIS or Rhinoceros.
Which CAD was used to create the shape?

Send us the original and GiD models to have a look. (can send directly to
escolano at cimne.upc.edu instead of the gidlist)
