Could you show me how to prepare the format of batch file (*.bch) for creating:

1. Set of arclines (first attached file)

2. NURBS Surfaces whose bondary consist of lines (or especially: lines +
arclines) (second attached files)

The batch file, is a text file with the set of GiD commands used to do the operations.
To know the syntax o the batch commands, for example you can do the operations as user,
and then use the Undo window (Utilities-Undo ctrl-z) to see which are the GiD words internally used.


You can also write a '.geo' GiD ASCII file with the exact geometry you want,
the format of this geometry file was explained in this document of an old course

And it is possible to create also GiD entities at Tcl scripting programming level, with the GiD_Geometry command
(see help on GiD customization-Tcl/Tk extension-Control funcions-Special functions-Geometry)
and with the GiD_Process Tcl command that send commands like the batch ones to be done by GiD)

I am new to GiD, evaluating it at the moment. I want to make a mesh for
the attached geometry (in Parasolid format, we are using Solidworks)
which has 2 bodies, one partially inside the other. So far, I did not
succeed in preserving the interface in the mesh. GiD seems to make just
a volume mesh so that I have a unique body with one boundary at the end.
But I need to have 2 bodies and a boundary between them for the FEM
simulation.
Can GiD do this kind of things, and if so, how do I achieve it?
A hint on how to proceed would be most welcome.

3D meshing problem with inner surfaceThe volumes become connected, because by default a collapse is automatically invoked after the import, and the surfaces of both volumes were joined (and a single surface is shared by both volumes).

You can disable it by setting: Utilities-Preferences... Exchange, and unselect the 'Automatic collapse after import'

Note: a 'repair' is automatically invoked also, in this case if you disable the collapse, can do the repair to fix some problem with 'Utilities-Repair Model", else some surfaces can't be rendered and probably meshed.

The collapse can be also manually invoked with Geometry-Edit-Collapse-Model

If the volumes were already joined, you can separate them using Geometry-Edit-Uncollapse-Volumes
then the common entities (surfaces, lines and points) will be duplicated to have each volume its own entity

Hi,

thank you for your answer. I now can see that my mesh has boundaries
with Mesh-View Mesh boundary. But when I export the mesh using the .unv
template, and open it with ElmerGUI, there still is only one boundary,
i.e. the outer surface of the geometry. What can I do to have all the
surfaces initially present in the geometry as separate boundaries, so
that I can assign boundary conditions in Elmer?

If do you have in GiD geometry for two volumes 'duplicated- non shared surfaces', then when meshing you will have non-shared nodes (you can see it as you said showing mesh boundaries)
and when exporting this mesh with the .unv template you will maintain this topology.

In any case, don't export only the GiD mesh to Elmer using unv I-deas format!!
It exists a 'elmer.gid' problemtype that you can download at the Elmer webpage: http://www.csc.fi/english/pages/elmer/interfaces

Follow the instruction of this page to use Elmer with GiD,
then you will assign the conditions directly inside GiD and start the Elmer calculation pressing the GiD calculate button.

I now understand (also after reading

must assign a surface constraint to every surface if I want them as
separate boundaries in the final mesh.
I have tried to do that, however since my geometry contains more than
just a few surfaces, it is
rather tedious to select them all one after the other with the mouse to
assign surface constraints. Is there a possibility to (automatically)
assign surface constraints (with different indexes!) to all surfaces in
the model? Is there something like a geometry explorer, listing all
surfaces and bodies of a geometry, where I could do this kind of
assignment (or at least see the structure of the geometry)?
Modeobver, if I select some surfaces and assign them surface
constraints, it seems that GiD does not merge the nodes at the interface
between the two bodies. Is it possible to do that, and how? This is the
crucial point for the decision whether or not we will buy this
software...

There are different ways to select entities, and for example separate them by layers to aid view and selection.
Usually it is possible to select parts from different points of view, or connected tangent entities, or using some entity selection filters.
you can select all entities writting 1:end or 1:
and you can automatize some condition assignation from Tcl scripting language.

The 'structure of the geometry' could be the layers not?

About to 'merge notes' , the topology of the geometry is strictily preserved for the mesh. If do you have joined geometric entities you will have joined mesh entities.
If you don't have the geometry you want, then you must modify the geometry, joining or separating as you solver or Elmer requires.

Hi,

I still have problems with meshing a geometry with several bodies in 3D.
I have (with some helpful hints from Mark Smith, thank you very much!)
successfully generated a conformal mesh for the first test geometry in
the attachment (Baugruppe1.x_t) and verified (with Elmer) that heat
passes from one body to the other. Now my "real" geometry (which I
cannot post here) has small overlaps between the bodies for technical
reasons. So I asked my colleagues from the construction department to
create a test geometry with a small overlap. It is also attached
(Baugruppe1_overlap.x_t). I generated a mesh in the same way, but this
time, it was not conformal between the two bodies: heat did not flow
uniformingly through the interface.
Even worse: when I import my "real" geometry (it has more bodies and is
more complicated than the test geometries), GiD crashes.
Any idea what can be done here?

3D meshing problem with inner surface and overlapInitially your x_t volumes are completelly independent of each other, they don't share any surface.
if you import with the 'Automatic collapse after import' option unselected, then do you have this case
(it is then recommended to do a 'Utilities-Repair to fix some possible import problems)

If do you want to connect this volumes, by sharing surfaces (e.g. then heat can pass between bodies)
then you must join them manually: e.g. deleting one of the surfaces (first volume must be deleted) and using only one for both volumes
To aid you in this task, it exists the 'collapse' tool, that join points close than a tolerance.
This tolerance must be set (in Utilities-Preferences-Exchange - Import tolernace) by the user depending on the model accuracy,
but once again, to aid the user we provide the 'Automatic tolerance' option (that get as tolernace a percent of the model size)

If this automatic tolerance is not appropiated for your model, you can set other (and do global or local collapse selecting some part)
in your example Baugruppe1_overlap.x_t, there are points with gap about 0.00035 units (and the automatic tolerance is about 3e-6)
then this gap won't be closed with this tolerance.
If you set a tolerance 0.0005 and collapse again, then all 'required' surfaces are joined as you want.

You must be carful with the collapse tolerance, only 'small tolerances' must be used, else the geometry could be corrupted (the curves won't be on the surfaces with precision, etc)
And maybe some case can't be joined by the collapse, then you must manually modify the geometry to have exactly what you want to simulate.

About the model that crash, you can send me directly if do you want, to escolano at cimne.upc.edu to test it.

I have (with some helpful hints from Mark Smith, thank you very much!) successfully generated a conformal mesh for the first test geometry in the attachment (Baugruppe1.x_t) and verified (with Elmer) that heat passes from one body to the other. Now my "real" geometry (which I cannot post here) has small overlaps between the bodies for technical reasons. So I asked my colleagues from the construction department to create a test geometry with a small overlap. It is also attached (Baugruppe1_overlap.x_t). I generated a mesh in the same way, but this time, it was not conformal between the two bodies: heat did not flow uniformingly through the interface.

Even worse: when I import my "real" geometry (it has more bodies and is more complicated than the test geometries), GiD crashes.

Any idea what can be done here?
