Hi GiD team & fellow Gidders,
Can you tell me if it is possible to produce a swept mesh using the attached example geometry and if so how to achieve it.
The surface with the inner square I wish to triangular mesh then sweep this mesh through to the opposite face produceing a volume mesh of prism elements. I do not wish to split the volume first as this should not be necessary.

You can't generate a semi-structured mesh without modify the geometry to
have 'prismatic volumes' (two 'equivalent tops' connected by 'lateral
surfaces' of 4 sides)



I attach the new model with the kind of prisms that do you want.

Hi Enrique,
Thank you. I was afraid you would tell me this ;-(
I use Comsol and in their meshing of swept meshes you don't have to split the volume into multiple volumes first. You mesh the top surface then sweep it through to the bottom surface, this is much easier to do. Maybe this could be implemented?

In future would it be possible to have a mesh tree where all the meshing steps are recorded so if you want to modify a step then this could be easy to achieve? I think at this moment it requires that you record a macro then edit this ( once you have got it correct and removed any errors) or is there another method?

You can generate the mesh only of the ‘top surface’ (e.g. setting to not to mesh the volume and the other surfaces, and to mesh these surfaces, or also deleting the volume and the rest of unneeded surfaces)

And then create the prisms by a copy by translation of triangles, with extrusion of the volume elements (could use copy multiple)



But operating directly with mesh instead of with geometry is not a good idea with GiD.
