Dear GID users,



I am a new GID user. I have a question on how to generate layers after I
import GID-format mesh.



Here is what I tried to do: I import an external mesh to GID. The mesh file
only has information about nodes and elements, as described in reference
manual - files - import - GiD mesh. I do have a material number after the
connectivity definition for each element. Now I want to divide the problem
into different layers based on the material number. The GiD mesh section in
reference manual seems refers to using the option Material. But it is not
obvious to me how to do it. Could somebody kindly help me with this?

You are going to discover one of the semi-hidden GiD commands:


Utilities-Graphical-Toolbars-Right buttons-Outside

and in the newly appeared buttons:

View-Layers-Material- ...

Please, note that you can achieve the same effect by writing the
commands in
the command line.

You mentioned about the commands, which will be convenient when the number
of layers is big. Could I ask what are they?

MensajeThe commands can be written directly in the lower GiD command line instead to click a button or menu.

For example, create the layers 'Layer0' , 'Layer1' and 'Layer2' , and put this in the GiD command line:

escape escape escape escape view layers material Layer0 0
escape escape escape escape view layers material Layer1 1
escape escape escape escape view layers material Layer2 2

Note: can uset the upper arrow key to edit a previous line.

If you need frequently this feature, can create a tcl procedure to automatize it, for example:

proc MatToLayer { } {
set mats [.central.s info materials]
set layers [.central.s info layers]
set imat 0
foreach mat $mats {
incr imat
set layer "Layer$imat"
if { [lsearch $layers $layer] == -1 } {
.central.s process escape escape escape escape view layers new $layer
}
.central.s process escape escape escape escape view layers material $layer $imat
}
}


To load this new tcl procedure, you can create a problemtype.
