[GiDlist] Shell elements in GiD 9.0.4

Post by Yaman Sami Shareef Al-Kamaki »

Hi
Kindly, I want a help regarding shell elements (ATENA-GiD) 9.0.4:
I am trying to wrap a circular column using on layer of CFRP with epoxy.
I want to set epoxy and CFRP as shell elements, but my Qestion is where can I find any icon in GiD related to choosing the shell elements?

Best Regards

Yaman

[GiDlist] Shell elements in GiD 9.0.4

I don't know how shell elements must be defined for Atena (type of supported elements, and if it is necessary to apply some condition or material to define its properties),
but in GiD you can create for example a volumetric circular column, meshed with tetrahedra,
and you can explicilty set that also the triangles of the cilyindrical surface are generated (I think that this is the kind of shell elements you want, not?)
To do it you must set: Mesh-Mesh criteria-Mesh-Surfaces and select the surfaces where to you want the additional surfacic elements.

Hello,

My GID version is 10.0.9.

I'm modeling CFRP (Carbon fiber reinforced polymer) as 3D shell element (for strengthening of a beam).
The mesh process creates shell elements for the CFRP volume and it surrounding surfaces.

I tried to use Mesh Criteria->No Mesh in the surfaces of CFRP volume but an error occurs because they are also part of a Contact Volume.

I need to keep surface elements in that case ??

Best regards

In theory is possible to set the no mesh criteria without affect the mesh of other entities.
Maybe is a problem of this 10.0.9 version meshing contact volumes.
You can try with latest 14.x GiD versions (10.x password is not valid for 14.x but a free temporary password could be used)
If current latest versions fail could attach a zip with the model to test it.

Dear Escolano,

I tried to simulate a 3D beam strengthened with CFRP wrap.
The CFRP wrap was modeled with 2D composite elements.

To add interface elements between CFRP/beam, I created an auxiliary surface with the same mesh size of CFRP surface.
The auxiliary surface was connected by master-slave condition to the beam and it has no material assigned.

CFRP surface uses: Mesh Criteria > Mesh > Surface
Auxiliary surface uses: Mesh Criteria > Default > Surface

GiD shows this message: "WARNING: 1 surface of Contact Volume XX is forced to be meshed and the other no. Both must be in the same case".

When both surfaces are defined - Mesh Criteria > Mesh > Surface - an error occurred because the auxiliary surface has no material assigned.

My question is, this auxiliary surface need to be meshed in order to have interface elements working properly?
If yes, how can I do it?

Best regards

I repeat again exactly the same answer:
1-In theory it seems possible (but is impossible to guess how is exactly your case and which entities, conditions and materials applied are affecting)
2-In practice it depends on each GiD version, contact surface/volume are unusual entities to force a mesh behavior and is prone to errors.
3-attach a zip with the model to test it.

The model was attached in this message.
GiD version 10.0.9 (script 15881)
Attachments
3DBeam-Wrap-Membrane-Plastic.gid.rar
The layer WrapInterface is only need to make compatible mesh with SikaWrap and add contact volume.

Hello,
I've tried to reproduce the case you are talking about with the model you have attached, and both version 10.0.9 and 14.1.2d of GiD are working properly. In both cases, each one of the surfaces have mesh if the mesh criteria is 'Mesh', and no mesh if the mesh criteria is 'default'.
Maybe I'm not understanding well the problem you have...
