Issue with 2D Interface Element (Crack) Modeling in ATENA GiD

Hi all,

I am trying to perform a 2D beam analysis where I want to incorporate cracks using interface elements. My approach is to model the cracks explicitly as interface elements. However, I am running into an issue: since the interface element is defined as a 2-point surface, I am unable to assign a structured mesh along the beam. When I try, I get the following error:

“No valid surfaces selected (only 4-sided or 3-sided or NURBS are valid).”

Has anyone faced a similar problem or have suggestions on how to properly mesh a 2D beam with interface elements representing cracks? Are there any recommended workarounds for this limitation?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I ran into a similar limitation before. One workaround is to split the beam into small 2D elements along the crack line and assign interface elements manually between them  :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

You can assign structured mesh number of divisions to both curves of the ‘contact surface’

Mesh→Structured→Lines→Assign number of divisions
