Dear Mr./Mrs.
My name is Chara and I am a student at UC Davis. I am currently working with
the GID program on a retaining wall problem. I have a 3D model 8x3x1 that
represents the retained soil. What I want is to set beam element on one site
that will represent the wall. My question is how can I set this beam element
in GID.
Regards,
Chara

GiD itself doesn’t includes any simulation code. It is a neutral pre/postprocessor that could be adapted to different simulation programs.
GiD can generate line elements, surface elements (triangles or quadrilaterals). and volume elements (tetrahedra, hexahedra, prisms) but how
are they used for the analysis depends on the external simulation code.
Do you know the ‘problemtype’ that you are going to use for your analysis?
Wich kind of analysis to you want?
if do you want to analize the wall probably a linear elastic structural analysis is enougth, but if do you want to analize the soil probably you need
a more specialized geotechnical code
And you can use more than one simplified model to represent you physics. You must to select how to do the FEM representation:
- a 2D plane strain model
- a 3D model with solid elements
- a 3D model mixing solid, shells, beams
You can donwnload “RamSeries” to do elastic structural analysis (from the GiD menu Data-Problemtype-Internet retrieve).
Once your problemtype is installed your can load it in GiD with Data-Problemtype-RamSeries…
Read the problemtype help to learn how to use it
